The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (MAHATET), conducted by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE), is a competitive exam taken by aspirants who wish to become teachers in the state of Maharashtra. MAHATET exam is conducted every year. The exam duration is 150 minutes, and it takes place offline. The test consists of two papers. The first paper evaluates the candidates applying to teach the primary classes, and the second evaluates candidates applying to teach the upper primary classes.

Eligibility criteria for applying for MAHATET:

1. Educational Qualification: The minimum eligibility criteria for MAHATET Paper 1 is passing Class 10 and Class 12 with at least 50% marks. The minimum eligibility criteria for appearing in Paper 2 is Class 12 and a valid graduation degree. Aspirants may also have a BEd or DEd degree with at least 50% marks from a recognised college. A background in teaching will also give the aspirants an added advantage while appearing for the exam. 

Candidates applying for teaching classes 1 to 5 must pass class 12 and D.Ed from a recognised board with at least 45% marks. The candidate must also pass a two-year diploma program from a notable educational institute. Subsequently, the candidate must also pass their intermediate exams with 50%. They must also pass a two-year special education program. Teaching aspirants must pass graduation with at least 45% for teaching classes 6 to 8. They must also possess a degree in education from a recognised educational institution. The candidate must complete class 12 and 4 years of a college education. 

2. No specific age limit: Aspirants of all ages can apply for MAHATET. Any candidate who wants to become a teacher at any stage of their life can apply for MAHATET. There are no specific restrictions on the candidate’s age limit appearing for the exam. However, since the minimum educational requirement is Class 12, it is safe to say that the aspirants applying should be above 18. 

3. Must be a Maharashtra Resident: MAHATET is a Maharashtra-centric exam. The test only happens in Maharashtra. Therefore, the applicants applying for this test must also be residents of Maharashtra. A non-resident applying for MAHATET will not get the same benefits of MAHATET as a Maharashtra resident. The test centres of the exam are also located in Maharashtra. Therefore, it will be easier for a resident Maharashtrian to reach the venue quickly. Candidates must also provide domicile proof during the application process.
